eSIM Not Working? Complete Troubleshooting Guide (2026)

Fix common eSIM problems: no service, data roaming off, wrong default line, APN settings, network selection. Step-by-step for iPhone and Android.

Quick Answer

If your eSIM has no data connection, check three things first: (1) data roaming is enabled for the eSIM line, (2) the eSIM is set as your cellular data line, and (3) your phone isn’t in airplane mode. These three settings account for over 80% of eSIM issues. If those are correct, restart your phone. Still not working? Read on for the full 15-issue troubleshooting checklist.

1. Is Data Roaming Turned On?

This is the single most common eSIM issue. Travel eSIMs require data roaming to be enabled because they connect to partner networks abroad.

iPhone

  1. Open Settings > Cellular
  2. Tap your eSIM line (labeled “Travel,” “Secondary,” or whatever you named it)
  3. Toggle Data Roaming to ON (green)

Android (Samsung, Pixel, OnePlus)

  1. Open Settings > Connections > SIM Manager (Samsung) or Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs (Pixel)
  2. Tap your eSIM line
  3. Toggle Data Roaming to ON

Important: Only enable data roaming on your travel eSIM, not your home SIM. Roaming on your home SIM can result in expensive carrier charges.

2. Is the eSIM Set as Your Cellular Data Line?

Your phone can have multiple SIM/eSIM profiles but only one active data line at a time. If your home SIM is still set as the data line, your travel eSIM won’t be used for internet.

iPhone

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular
  2. Tap Cellular Data
  3. Select your travel eSIM line
  4. Make sure Allow Cellular Data Switching is OFF (this prevents your phone from falling back to your expensive home SIM)

Android

  1. Go to Settings > Connections > SIM Manager (Samsung) or Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs (Pixel)
  2. Tap Mobile Data
  3. Select your travel eSIM

3. Is the eSIM Profile Actually Active?

An installed eSIM isn’t necessarily active. You may have installed it before your trip and left it toggled off.

iPhone

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular
  2. Find your eSIM line
  3. Make sure Turn On This Line is toggled ON

Android

  1. Go to Settings > Connections > SIM Manager
  2. Find your eSIM
  3. Toggle it ON

4. Are You in Airplane Mode?

Airplane mode disables all cellular connections, including eSIM. Check the control center (iPhone) or quick settings panel (Android) and make sure airplane mode is off.

Exception: You can enable airplane mode and then manually turn WiFi or Bluetooth back on. But cellular data will remain off until you disable airplane mode entirely.

5. Does Your Phone Support eSIM?

Not all phones have eSIM capability. If you can’t find eSIM options in your settings, your device may not support it.

Phones that support eSIM (2026):

BrandModels with eSIM
AppleiPhone XS and newer (2018+)
SamsungGalaxy S20 and newer, Galaxy Z Fold/Flip series
GooglePixel 3a and newer
OnePlusOnePlus 12, 13, Open
Xiaomi13 Pro, 14 series (select markets)
MotorolaRazr (2022+), Edge 40+

Locked phones: Some carrier-locked phones have eSIM hardware but the feature is disabled by the carrier. Contact your carrier to confirm eSIM is unlocked on your device.

Check the full list at /compatible-devices/.

6. Have You Restarted Your Phone?

A restart clears temporary network errors and forces your phone to re-register with the cellular network. This fixes a surprising number of eSIM issues.

  1. Power off completely (not just sleep)
  2. Wait 10 seconds
  3. Power on
  4. Wait 30-60 seconds for the network to connect

If you just installed the eSIM or changed network settings, a restart is almost always necessary.

7. Is the APN Configured Correctly?

APN (Access Point Name) settings tell your phone how to connect to the carrier’s data network. Most travel eSIMs configure the APN automatically, but occasionally the settings don’t apply.

iPhone

iPhones almost never require manual APN configuration. The correct APN is downloaded with the eSIM profile. If you suspect an APN issue:

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular > your eSIM line > Cellular Data Network
  2. Check if the APN field is populated
  3. If blank, contact the eSIM provider for the correct APN

Android

  1. Go to Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names
  2. Select the APN associated with your eSIM
  3. If no APN exists, tap Add and enter the settings provided by your eSIM provider

Common eSIM APNs:

Provider NetworkAPNNotes
Most travel eSIMsinternetDefault that works in most cases
T-Mobile roamingfast.t-mobile.comUS-based eSIMs
3HK / Hutchisonmobile.three.com.hkAsia plans
TruphoneimsGlobal plans

If you purchased from e-sim.onl, APN settings are pre-configured. If data still doesn’t work, contact support.

8. Is Automatic Network Selection Enabled?

Your phone should automatically find and connect to a compatible network. If manual network selection is on, your phone may be stuck trying to connect to an incompatible carrier.

iPhone

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular > your eSIM line > Network Selection
  2. Toggle Automatic to ON

Android

  1. Go to Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > Network Operators
  2. Select Search Automatically or toggle automatic selection ON

If automatic selection connects to a weak network, you can manually select a different carrier. The eSIM provider’s documentation will list supported networks in each country.

9. Are You in a Coverage Area?

Travel eSIMs connect to specific carrier networks in each country. Coverage isn’t always universal.

Common dead zones:

  • Airports (inside terminals, especially underground areas)
  • Rural and mountainous regions
  • Subway systems and underground transit
  • Remote islands
  • Border areas between countries (your phone may oscillate between networks)

Check coverage maps for your destination at /destinations/. If you’re in a major city and still have no signal, the issue is likely a settings problem, not coverage.

10. Has Your Data Allowance Expired?

If your eSIM worked initially but stopped, you may have used all your data or the plan validity period may have expired.

How to check data usage:

  • iPhone: Settings > Cellular > scroll down to see data used per line
  • Android: Settings > Connections > Data Usage

If your plan has expired, purchase a new plan at e-sim.onl/destinations. You can install multiple eSIM profiles on most modern phones.

11. Is There a Network Outage?

Carrier outages happen everywhere. If your eSIM was working and suddenly stopped in an area with known coverage, the local network may be experiencing issues.

How to check:

  • Search “[carrier name] outage [country]” online (using WiFi)
  • Check social media for reports from locals
  • Ask hotel/hostel staff if they’re experiencing network issues

If there’s an outage, wait it out or manually select a different network operator (see issue #8).

12. Do You Need to Reset Network Settings?

This is the nuclear option for network issues. It clears all saved WiFi passwords, Bluetooth pairings, VPN configurations, and cellular settings, then rebuilds them from scratch.

iPhone

  1. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset
  2. Tap Reset Network Settings
  3. Enter your passcode
  4. Confirm

Android

  1. Go to Settings > General Management > Reset
  2. Tap Reset Network Settings
  3. Confirm

Warning: You’ll need to re-enter WiFi passwords and re-pair Bluetooth devices. Your eSIM profiles will remain installed but may need to be re-activated.

13. Is Your Phone’s Software Up to Date?

Outdated software can cause eSIM connectivity issues, especially after carrier network updates.

iPhone

Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install any available iOS updates.

Android

Go to Settings > Software Update (Samsung) or Settings > System > System Update (Pixel) and install any available updates.

14. Is a VPN Interfering with Your Connection?

VPNs can sometimes interfere with initial eSIM activation and connectivity. If you’re using a VPN:

  1. Disable the VPN temporarily
  2. Restart your phone
  3. Wait for the eSIM to connect
  4. Re-enable the VPN once data is working

Some countries (China, UAE, Russia) have restricted internet that may require a VPN for certain services, but the eSIM connection itself should work without one. See our China eSIM guide for country-specific VPN advice.

15. Is the QR Code Used or Invalid?

Each eSIM QR code can only be activated once. If you deleted the eSIM profile and try to scan the same QR code again, it won’t work.

Common QR code issues:

  • Already activated: The QR code was scanned and installed, even if you later removed the profile
  • Expired: Some QR codes expire if not activated within a certain timeframe
  • Wrong device: The QR code was activated on a different phone

If you need a replacement, contact the eSIM provider’s support team. On e-sim.onl, you can manage your eSIMs from your account dashboard.
