How to Choose the Right eSIM Plan

How much data do I actually need?

Most travellers underestimate how much data they use. Here’s a practical guide:

UsageDaily data1 week2 weeks
Light (maps, messaging)~150 MB~1 GB~2 GB
Moderate (social, browsing)~400 MB~3 GB~6 GB
Heavy (video calls, streaming)~1 GB+~7 GB~14 GB+

Tip: If you’re going to a country you’ve visited before, check your phone’s data usage history in Settings to see your typical daily consumption.

How long is my trip?

eSIM plans come in days of validity — not days of use. The countdown starts from the first time you activate data, not from when you purchase.

  • 1–3 day trip: Buy a 3–7 day plan (gives buffer in case of delays)
  • 1 week: A 7–15 day plan works well
  • 2+ weeks: Look for 30-day plans — usually better value per GB

Single country vs. regional plans

If you’re visiting France, Spain, and Italy in one trip, a European regional plan saves you buying three separate eSIMs.

Understanding price per GB

The cheapest plan by total price isn’t always the best value. Look at the per-GB cost shown on each plan card.

  • 1 GB for $4.99 = $4.99/GB
  • 5 GB for $14.99 = $3.00/GB ← better value
  • 10 GB for $24.99 = $2.50/GB ← best value per GB

Unless you’re on a very short trip, buying more data upfront is almost always cheaper.

Speed: 3G vs 4G/5G

Most plans offer 4G/LTE speeds. A small number of economy plans throttle to 3G after a data cap.

  • 3G is fine for messaging and maps, but video calls will struggle
  • 4G/5G is what you want for anything beyond basic use

Check the speed badge on each plan before purchasing.

Quick decision guide

  • Weekend trip, light use → 1 GB / 7 days
  • One week, normal use → 3–5 GB / 7–15 days
  • Two weeks, normal use → 5–10 GB / 30 days
  • Heavy user or long trip → 10–20 GB / 30 days
