What Happens After You Buy an eSIM

The full journey — from purchase to expiry

Here’s exactly what happens after you buy an eSIM plan on e-sim.onl, step by step.

Step 1: Payment

After selecting your plan and checking out, payment is processed securely through Stripe. You can pay with:

  • Credit or debit card
  • Apple Pay
  • Google Pay

Your order appears in the dashboard immediately with a Pending status.

Step 2: QR code delivery

Within seconds of payment, two things happen:

  1. Email — A confirmation email with your QR code and activation code (LPA string) is sent to your email address
  2. Dashboard — Your order updates to Completed and the QR code becomes available in your dashboard

If you don’t see the email within a few minutes, check your spam folder. The QR code in the dashboard is always available as a backup.

Step 3: Install the eSIM (do this at home on Wi-Fi)

You need Wi-Fi to download the eSIM profile. Install before your trip — don’t wait until you’re at the airport or abroad without reliable Wi-Fi.

iPhone:

  1. Go to Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM
  2. Tap Use QR Code
  3. Scan the QR code from your email or dashboard
  4. Label it something clear like “Travel Data”
  5. Tap Done — the profile is now installed but not yet active

Android (Samsung):

  1. Go to Settings → Connections → SIM card manager → Add mobile plan
  2. Tap Scan QR code and scan it
  3. Follow the prompts to download and confirm

Android (Pixel):

  1. Go to Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs → Add SIM
  2. Tap Download a SIM instead?
  3. Scan the QR code

Can’t scan? Use the activation code from your dashboard for manual entry.

After installation, your eSIM status changes to Ready to InstallInstallingActive (or stays dormant until you enable it).

Step 4: Activate when you land

Your plan’s validity countdown starts at first data use, not at purchase or installation. So install early, but activate when you arrive.

When you reach your destination:

  1. Go to your phone’s SIM settings
  2. Enable the travel eSIM line if it’s not already on
  3. Set it as your default line for data
  4. Turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM line (this is required — travel eSIMs use roaming)
  5. Keep your home SIM enabled for calls and texts

Quick toggle: Turn Airplane Mode on and off to force your phone to connect to the local network.

Step 5: Monitor your data usage

Your dashboard shows:

  • Usage bar — percentage of data consumed with remaining GB shown
  • Expiry countdown — days or hours until the plan expires

Usage is synced from the network provider and updated via webhooks plus an hourly background sync. It can be up to 1 hour behind your actual consumption.

You’ll also receive automatic email alerts:

  • At 75% usage — a heads-up to slow down or plan a top-up
  • At 100% usage — your data is exhausted

Step 6: Top up if needed

If your plan supports top-ups and you’re running low:

  1. Open the order in your dashboard
  2. Tap Top up
  3. Select a data package
  4. Pay through Stripe
  5. Data is added to your existing eSIM — no new QR code needed

Not all plans support top-ups. If yours doesn’t, you can purchase a new plan from the destinations page instead. See the full top-up guide for details.

Step 7: Plan expires

Your plan ends when either:

  • Data runs out — status changes to Data Used Up (you may be able to top up)
  • Validity period ends — status changes to Expired

After expiry:

  • Data stops working on that eSIM line
  • The eSIM profile remains on your phone until you delete it
  • You can delete it from your SIM settings to keep things tidy, or leave it — it won’t cause any issues

Tips for a smooth experience

  • Install at home on Wi-Fi — don’t wait until you’re abroad
  • Label your eSIM — “Travel Data” or the country name makes it easy to find
  • Enable Data Roaming on the eSIM line — this is the number one reason data doesn’t work after installation
  • Keep your home SIM on for calls and texts — only switch data to the travel eSIM
  • Check your dashboard periodically to monitor usage, but remember it can lag up to 1 hour
